“Who is the number one God?” H.G. Wells ponders such a question in his 19th century classic tale The Island of Dr. Moreau. In the 20th century, the question of genetic engineering was given center stage in the 1996 movie version of the book. A brilliant geneticist, played by Marlon Brando, attempts to create the perfect creature, crossing human and animal DNA. The result of the unethical experimentation is brutish and cruel. H. G. Wells’ story via book and movie displays the end results of humans attempting to be God. In a vexing, violent scene toward the end of the movie, the main human character is confronted by one of the creatures, a “beast man.” The creature tells the man to admit the beast is God. The man looks around at all the other creatures, all strong, all equally worthy of the divine title. Then, in a moment of theological clarity, the main character identifies the basic problem. If a creature claims to be “God,” by what authority will he say so? With so many strong beasts all claiming godhood, a brave question is asked, “Who is the number one God?”
H.G. Wells was concerned that any creature or human authority would need oversight by another authority. “Who is the number one God?” turns into “Who watches the watchmen?” The graphic novel entitled Watchmen – later a movie by the same title – asks the question again and again “Who watches the watchmen?” Who are the “watchmen?” People, media, organizations, pundits, news outlets, or phone apps that we consciously and subconsciously allow to become our authority, our “god.” It is a perennial question, one which every generation must answer. The question “Who watches the watchmen?” becomes “Who is the number one God?” At the Comenius Institute we believe we judge all creaturely authority by God’s authority: the number one and only true God.
