FULL TEXT:

The four college students came over for dinner.

We talked for five hours.

Our discussion covered everyday issues, future vocation, and educational opportunities.

Did you know that 75% of Christian students may leave The Church after attending public university? What’s the answer? Personal, spiritual investment on campus with students. We spend time with Christian young people.

I get upset with some in my generation who complain about young people. The complaints begin with phrases like “They just don’t understand” to “I worry about the next generation.”

I have two responses. First, how much time have older Christians spent with younger Christians? Time matters. Relationship matters.

Second, I don’t worry about the next generation at all. Why? Because when I spend time with Christian young people they are grateful; grateful that someone my age cares about them at their age.

Honestly, that’s all it takes. 18-25 year olds are hungry for wisdom, they are sponges soaking up every opportunity to spend time with someone older.

He sat across the table from me at the university where I work. “I wonder if you might help me,” he began the conversation. “You see, I had bad study habits in high school. I did not care for my classes. I did not think they were worth my time. But applying Christian principles since coming to university, I have realized I bear responsibility for what I’m learning.” He stopped and repeated his opening statement, “So, I wonder if you might help me, help me maintain discipline in study.”

I wish I had 100 more like him. And there are 100 more like him. At the Comenius Institute we care deeply for students and their studies. We spend time with young Christians at university because we know they are the leaders of the next generation.

For Truth in Two, this is Dr. Mark Eckel, president of the Comenius Institute, personally seeking truth wherever it’s found.
