“Are you going back home,” I asked my plane partner. “Yes, but it doesn’t matter where you live as long as there are beautiful people. There are beautiful people everywhere.”
Ever the inquirer I had to ask, “What’s your definition of beautiful?” Pondering a question he had not encountered before he wondered aloud, “Well, I suppose, beautiful people are people who love and respect others.”
We continued to speak throughout the short trip. I asked for definitions for “love” and “respect” but was met with more words that needed more explanation; so I stopped.
“With all the questions,” he assumed, “You must be a teacher. What do you teach?” I ran off the list of the universities and subjects, among them, theology.
“I’m interested in philosophy,” he responded, “What do you think is the most important question in philosophy?” He was honest, sincere.
“We all start with one of two basic assumptions,” I began. “Everyone chooses one or the other.” I pointed out the plane window. “You either believe this world is all there is, what you see is what you get,” I paused as I caught his eye, “Or, your other option is that you believe there is another world outside this one.”
He smiled. “Wow! That’s deep!” I laughed, “Yes, my students tell me I make their heads hurt.” He joined my laughter.
The plane was about to land. I returned to seriousness, “Those are your two options,” handing him my business cards. “If you’re ever interested in pursuing the discussion, I would be glad to do so.”
At the Comenius Institute we believe there are two basic assumptions. Either you believe this world is all there is or you believe there is Someone who has made the world. We agree with the apostle Paul who declared “By Jesus all things were created.”
