Oxytocin

The Love Molecule

Created in us to care for others.

Why would I lay down my life for my son and my daughter?

How is our physical person designed to automatically connect to our children?

The science is pretty clear. Watch our Truth in Two video to find out why! (full text below)

Science shows that LOVE is a clear indication of our creation: the greatest Christian apologetic.

FULL TEXT:

I couldn’t wait to tell my children. One of the reasons why I love them is because of what scientists call the “love molecule,” Oxytocin. After reading Arthur Brooks book Love Your Enemies my love for my children, for my grandchildren, made so much sense. Here is what Arthur Brooks and Dr. Paul Zak state.

“Babies give you plenty of reasons not to like them. They can’t do any work, they keep you up at night, and they scream like tyrants when they don’t get what they want.” When Brooks had his own child he reports, “But when I held him for the very first time in the moments after he was born, something popped inside my head. I could almost feel it. What was it? Oxytocin. My brain had released the love molecule, and I felt a connection to my son to the point where I would gladly die for him.”

Dr. Zak’s scientific studies revealed the key was the brain chemical, oxytocin. Dr. Zak concludes that there is an underlying need for “human connection” something “we so deeply desire.” Oxytocin “makes us connect to other people . . . it’s empathy that makes us help other people.”

As a theologian I think I understand the connection of our brain, oxytocin, and what Brooks calls the “underlying need for human connection.” Genesis 2 explains that the human pair Adam and Eve were originally created to complete each other. Our need for connection is a gift of God to our brains: oxytocin. My love for others, is born of a God-given need to care. God’s creation of human persons is invested with a built in “love molecule.” At the Comenius Institute we believe that the origin of life and love are interconnected, one of the reasons I love my children and grandchildren.

For Truth in Two, this is Dr. Mark Eckel, President of the Comenius Institute, personally seeking truth wherever it’s found.
