Can we just be friends?
The bonds of friendship bridge deep divides.
What happens when we seriously disagree?
Is it possible we can find commonness in our humanity?

FULL TEXT:
It seems that sometimes even friendship can come under attack. This past October I was watching an NFL game where President George W. Bush and Ellen DeGeneres were in attendance. The camera panned to them during a stoppage in play. The President and Ms. DeGeneres were sitting next to each other, conversing, and seen laughing together.
I thought to myself at the time, “That’s pretty cool. Here are two people who have many differences talking together. I’m glad the camera caught that moment.” I found out the next day, others were not so pleased. DeGeneres was on “the receiving end of backlash,” having had to explain herself to her liberal friends. It seems some saw her “enjoying the conservative politician’s company as a betrayal of her liberal values.” I looked in vain to see if conservatives were calling out President Bush. It seems the conservative crowd had nothing negative to say about the interaction.
Enter Michelle Obama. The former first lady spoke out about “the drama surrounding the talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.” Mrs. Obama spoke about her own “friendship with the former president” as she was interviewed on The Today Show by Jenna, President Bush’s daughter.
In Mrs. Obama’s words to Jenna Bush Hager, [Quote] “I had the opportunity to sit by your father at funerals, and we shared stories about our kids and about our parents. Our values are the same. We disagreed on policy, but we don’t disagree on humanity. We don’t disagree about love and compassion. I think that’s true for all of us, it’s just that we get lost in our fear of what’s different.” [End-quote]
At the Comenius Institute we celebrate difference. No, we do not always agree with the presuppositions or positions of others. But we agree with Michelle Obama that our humanity is most important, having been made in God’s image.
For Truth in Two, this is Dr. Mark Eckel, president of the Comenius Institute, sadly and personally seeking truth wherever it’s found.
