$100,000 dollars. This is the amount Kevin Love, star of the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers, is giving to support arena staff who cannot work during the Covid-19 shutdown. According to NBC News, [Quote] “NBA players are opening their wallets to try to help hourly workers who work in arenas. The outpouring of donations comes after NBA games were suspended for at least 30 days.” [End quote]
It is good to see someone who has more, coming to the aid of someone who has less. This NBA player reflects biblical truths. According to Deuteronomy 15, giving to another in need is born of a soft heart, a person who “opens his hand wide” to others in hardship. Psalm 34 says the person displaying a kind response to those in need will never have need. And Proverbs 28 tells us, to the person who fears God, she will never be in need.
In whatever circumstance, the word NEED takes on renewed importance. 1 Timothy 6 says that the rich bear responsibility to care for those who have need. Jesus’ story in Mark 12 about the poverty-stricken widow reminds us, she gave everything she had. And James 2 says, if we see someone in need, we must meet it: “thoughts and prayers” ring hollow, causing James to say, “What good is that?”
There is a growing list of players who have already pledged donations to stadium employees. Whether they know it or not, NBA players are practicing biblical truths.
In the words of Zion Williamson, another NBA star, “This is a small way for me to express my support and appreciation for these wonderful people who make our games possible.”
We should all consider the examples being set by these professional athletes: if we see a need, we should meet a need.
For Truth in Two, this is Dr. Mark Eckel, President of the Comenius Institute, personally seeking truth wherever it’s found.
