Zimbabwe. Uganda. Kenya. These are some of the countries represented by students in my PhD classes. The honor is all mine to participate in the teaching learning process with my African brothers.

The sacrifices these men have made to traverse an ocean and spend six days of residency intensives twice a year is astounding. As if crossing ethnic, linguistic, and cultural barriers is not enough, jet-lag by itself can be physically taxing.

So it came as no surprise to me to hear what they said midway through our time together. The students were telling me how hard the PhD work was for them. I listened to their apprehensions, made the academic adjustments I could for my class, and generally encouraged everyone.

Still concerned, one asked if it was worth continuing to earn the doctoral degree. I said:

“When you earn your PhD, you will change Africa for the next 100 years.”

They were speechless. So I added,

“YOU will be the leaders in your culture, in your generation, in ways the rest of us will never have opportunity to do. You need to do this work for the benefit of your countries and cultures into the 22nd century.”

Each looked around the semi-circled desks to their African compatriots. One to another, they nodded their heads. They looked back at me, smiled, and began to discuss our work for the day.

At the Comenius Institute we believe cultural change is best initiated within the people who live in that culture. The famous line in 2 Timothy 2 says it best: we “entrust to faithful individuals the deposit we have been given who then teach others.”

The 2000 year old Christian practice of passing on what Christianity teaches continues in Africa today.

For Truth in Two, this is Dr. Mark Eckel, President of the Comenius Institute, personally seeking Truth wherever it’s found.
